As a member of the Center for Geospatial Intelligence, I contribute to various U.S. Department of Defense projects. My work revolves around developing autonomy and AI systems for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. These systems play a crucial role in aiding soldiers and identifying explosive hazards and other potential threats.

My research is focused on Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision. For over a decade, I have been dedicated to improving Explosive Hazard Detection for the U.S. Army through the University of Missouri. One of my key areas of focus is linguistic explainable AI. Currently, I am working on developing a Fuzzy Linguistic Summary toolkit that will be open source.

On a personal note, I am happily married to the love of my life, Lauren Alvey!

Experience

Assistant Research Professor September 2024 – Present

At the University of Missouri, I research and develop systems for explosive hazard detection and drone autonomy. I’ve developed explainable linguistic summaries to assess performance of black-box models such as LLMs and object detectors. I also help manage data for the Center for Geospatial Intelligence and the MINDUL lab, mentoring students.

Research Consultant August 2023 – August 2024

Under the guidance of Dr. Derek T. Anderson, I earned my Ph.D. while working full-time at Mizzou. I balanced research, publications, and grants, focusing on advanced models for explosive hazard detection and drone autonomy.

Database Programmer Analyst March 2020 – August 2023

I joined during the COVID-19 pandemic and worked on projects involving object detection, segmentation, autonomous navigation, and more. I also served as a teaching assistant for Neural Networks.

Software Developer May 2019 – March 2020

At Shelter Insurance, I worked on Claims Processing Systems using Java, SpringBoot, SQL, and more. I also mentored at Hack Mizzou 2019.

Inpatient Pharmacy Technician February 2019 – May 2019

I supported intensive care and trauma units at the University of Missouri Hospital by managing medication inventory and logistics.

Senior Research Specialist & TA for Digital Signal Processing October 2017 – August 2018

Worked on buried explosive detection using GPR under Dr. Dominic K.C. Ho. Taught lab sessions for signal processing.

Research Assistant March 2014 – October 2016

At the Center for Geospatial Intelligence, I developed the FOMIACE detection algorithm and contributed to projects in agriculture, medical imaging, and more.
